PRISON LIBRARIES IN FOCUS: PROPOSED ACTION PLAN FROM THE CARIRI CEARENSE REGIONAL INDUSTRIAL PENITENTIARY

The library of the Cariri Regional Industrial Penitentiary (PIRC) is the object of study in this work, 

which seeks to investigate the nuances present there and which correspond to the reality of several prison 

units spread across the country. To this end, the work is based on the problem: 

how is it possible to propose an action plan for prison libraries applied to the Cariri Regional Industrial Penitentiary?

Thus, the general objective of this research is to investigate the prison library in the context of the Cariri Regional

Industrial Penitentiary, aiming to propose an action plan. As specific objectives, the aim is to reflect on prison 

institutions in the context of the prison community and prison libraries; identify the aspects that make up 

the operating structure of the library at the Cariri Regional Industrial Penitentiary; address possible prison library 

practices to optimize the situation of the prison community, as well as discuss library practices applied to the 

prison library in the context of the Cariri Regional Industrial Penitentiary. Regarding the methodological issue, 

the research is classified as descriptive, regarding its objectives; qualitative, regarding the nature of the 

research; case study, regarding the choice of object; and interview, bibliographic and documentary research, 

regarding the data collection technique. It is concluded that the availability of this work will contribute 

to the penitentiary body, through changes in the future performance of the PIRC prison library, much more 

than just reading activities, positively impacting the human conditions of inmates. His contribution took the 

form of the product that resulted from this research, drawing up an action plan focusing on the problem 

that gave rise to this academic work, namely the absence of library practices in prisons, due to the absence 

of a document that would guide them while managers, based on this assumption to create a plan that 

converged with the foundations of the library, specifically those of prison libraries.
