SUMMARY:

The contemporary urbanization process, marked by the accelerated growth of cities and the expansion of urban areas, has significantly transformed the global scenario. Today, more than half of the world's population lives in urban areas and this effect has resulted in notable climate changes. Heat islands, characterized by considerably higher temperatures in urbanized areas compared to rural areas, have become a growing concern in recent studies. Thus, this dissertation aims to analyze the occurrence of the phenomenon of surface heat islands on a spatio-temporal scale considering the years 2013, 2018 and 2023, through orbital images, and investigate the influence of land use and occupation processes and the presence of vegetation in changing the temperature in the municipalities of Crato, Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha, in the south of Ceará. To achieve the objectives, this research was divided into three stages: bibliographical and cartographic review and data collection; database creation and integration; and organization and interpretation of data, preparation of maps of surface temperature, vegetation index and land use and occupation. To achieve the result, remote sensing techniques and geoprocessing tools were used, based on Landsat satellite images, from which temperature data and vegetation indices could be extracted. Analysis of the results allowed identifying the distribution patterns of heat islands and understanding the factors that contribute to their formation, investigating the influence of soil cover types, especially with regard to the presence of vegetation. Based on the theoretical framework and analysis of the results, it was observed that the data demonstrated the worsening of the observed phenomenon, in line with the various news reports that note the gradual increase in the temperature of cities. Thus, this dissertation provides support for urban planning and the implementation of adaptation and mitigation measures for heat islands in these municipalities.
