RESUMO:

The university is characterized as an important space for the production, accumulation and dissemination of multiple knowledge, based on three inseparable pillars, namely: teaching, research and extension. It is noteworthy that within the scope of the Federal University of Cariri (UFCA) culture is inserted as the fourth pillar. The university extension promotes the sharing of knowledge, which, guided by a dialogic action, involves the university and the community in an action that articulates scientific knowledge, derived from theoretical teaching, and which, conducted by research, acts on the needs of the community, enabling the university the ability to promote the transformation of the social reality in which it operates. The inseparability between the pillars of the university, when well articulated, promote changes in the teaching and learning process, as well as didactic and pedagogically underpinning professional training, so that students and teachers effectively constitute subjects involved in the act of learning, teaching and train professionals and citizens. In this context, sustainable development presents itself as a guiding element that enables structural changes in current social, environmental, economic, political and cultural patterns. Furthermore, this research aims to analyze the effects of extension practices developed by UFCA in promoting Sustainable Development (SD) in the Metropolitan Region of Cariri (RM Cariri), from the perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (UN) . Therefore, the following specific objectives were listed: a) to reflect on the theoretical-practical relationship between university extension and sustainable regional development; b) understand the perspective of university extension undertaken by UFCA from its institutional documents; c) identify the relationship between the extension practices developed by UFCA and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). The methodological approach that guides the development of this research is guided by a case study with a descriptive approach and documental analysis based on a qualitative interpretation of the results. Furthermore, the study identified that in the context of UFCA, development is presented as a guiding element of its institutional actions, being present in its mission, vision and values, and also in institutional documents and resolutions, namely: Statutes, Institutional Development Plan (PDI), Institutional Strategic Planning (PEI), Sustainability Management Policy (PGS), Regulation of Extension Actions. Since 2018, through the implementation of the policy and sustainability, UFCA has established criteria for the prioritization and evaluation of extension projects and programs, thus, from 2019 onwards, the DS was inserted as a guideline in which it is responsible for the approval of programs and projects extension registered with PROEX. In the same year, UFCA became part of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) supporting an action that prioritizes the development of actions aimed at fulfilling the SDGs. In addition, the mapping of activities registered in PROEX identified: 41 actions in 2015, 83 actions in 2016, 78 actions in 2017, 105 actions in 2018, 94 actions in 2019 and 138 actions in 2020. These include programs, projects, courses , events and service provision, distributed in 08 (eight) thematic areas, namely: communication, culture, human rights and justice, education, environment, technology and production, work and health, and involve 03 (three) modalities, being these: Student Protagonism (PROPE), Teaching and Extension Program (PEEX) and wide competition. There is also a greater quantity of actions linked to the areas of health, education and environment, which meet the ODS-2, ODS-3, ODS-4, ODS6, ODS-8, ODS-11.
