SUMMARY:
Vegetable cultivation, especially tomato cultivation, has recently been highlighted by the intense use of chemical control for pests and diseases. The sustainability of agricultural systems must seek to promote the use of inputs that do not leave toxic residues in food and natural resources, such as those of conventional agriculture, which, in addition to increasing the cost of production, pose health risks to those who work directly on the farms and to consumers. To this end, this study will seek to diagnose the main pests that affect tomato farming in the Cariri region of Ceará and test the application of botanical extracts to control the pest with the greatest local impact. The research will consist of a diagnosis of key pests and the productive management of tomato cultivation, using as the main instrument for data collection the application of semi-structured interviews and questionnaires and the application of botanical extracts of bamboo (Mesosphaerum suaveolens (L.) Kuntze) and guaco (Mikania glomerata Springs). The possibility of identifying alternatives to the use of chemical synthetic insecticides is based on the need to address environmental, health, sustainability, food safety and economic issues that affect both producers and consumers. Research in this area can contribute to more sustainable agricultural practices that are beneficial to all involved.
