SUMMARY:

Less developed or developing places encounter greater difficulties related to Solid Waste Management/GRS, mainly in regions with limited public resources, as is the case of small municipalities and as is the case of the Cariri Oriental Region, which encompasses nine municipalities (Abaiara , Aurora, Barro, Brejo Santo, Jati, Mauriti, Milagres, Penaforte and Porteiras) with low demographic density and limited socioeconomic development. Based on this assumption, it is necessary to diagnose the current situation of GRS in these municipalities, in order to assist in decision-making by municipal public management regarding the problem, as well as to propose improvements to the practice of Solid Waste Management and guide the planning the actions of the Public Consortium for Solid Waste Management in the Eastern Cariri Region. For this purpose, the objective was to calculate the Updated Waste Management Condition Index – ICGRA applying the performance assessment of the nine Municipalities that make up the Public Solid Waste Management Consortium of the Cariri Oriental/CORES Region – Cariri Oriental, as a diagnostic tool for solid waste management services to identify opportunities to improve services. The data and Information regarding the indicators was obtained by consulting official websites, academic literature, plans and studies relevant to the subject, field visits, contact with municipal managers and photographic records. After applying the data diagnosed in the ICGRA methodology, municipal management will be classified as adequate or inadequate, depending on the score achieved by the municipality.
