Given the significant influence that urbanization processes exert on natural resources and consequently on the urban landscape, greater attention should be focused on environmental and urban planning of green areas. In this context, the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte has five special environmental protection zones, one of which is Special Zone 2, called Parque Ecológico das Timbaúbas, which integrates Riacho dos Macacos, one of the most important watercourses in the municipality. for, among other reasons, it comprises 17 tubular wells for public supply along its banks. However, despite being registered as an environmental protection area, with specific restrictions on urbanization, this zone is being the target of urban interference associated with the construction of houses and implementation of commercial projects, receiving sewage evictions without control or treatment. Thus, this research aimed to propose guidelines for land use and occupation for this zone, considering the principles of Sustainable Regional Development, as a way to contribute to the Urban and Environmental Planning of this area. For this, the research was carried out in four phases: 1. Survey and analysis of bibliographic sources; 2. Elaboration of cartographic representations comprising hydrogeomorphological and land use and occupation aspects; 3. Carrying out permeability tests in loco; and 4. Collection of surface soil samples for laboratory tests to obtain grain texture. From the results obtained, it was found that over the last 10 years there has been no progress in terms of the quality of water from Riacho dos Macacos and water from supply wells in the region that have high levels of nitrate. It was also verified that in the period from 2000 to 2020, the urbanization rate of Special Zone 2 increased 61.73%, resulting in the loss of permeable areas in the Riacho dos Macacos slope and in its alluvial zone, including the riparian forest. In addition, it was found that Riacho dos Macacos and Riacho das Timbaúbas, courses of order 4 and 3, respectively, contained in Special Zone 2, receive the flow of an expressive surface runoff area that starts from the highest parts of the its micro-basins, contributing to the current scenario of contamination of these streams, while leaving the soil in the referred zone susceptible to direct and indirect, diffuse or punctual contamination. Regarding the physical characteristics of the soil, a predominance of sandy, permeable material with hydraulic conductivity ranging from moderate to very fast (≥ 6.0 cm/h) was identified. These results show the fragile condition to which the studied area was exposed, thus requiring more restrictive measures of land use and occupation. Thus, guidelines were proposed for the physical protection of the soil, conservation of riparian vegetation and water resources in the studied area, through its zoning in permanent preservation area, transition zones, buffer zone and area destined for a linear urban park .
