RESUMO:

The need to give visibility to the identity mobilization processes that occur in the face of regional development processes, urged us to investigate this phenomenon in the Metropolitan Region of Cariri - RMC, in the south of Ceará. In the last ten years, these facts have been expanding and occurring in parallel: on the one hand there is the creation of the RMC and its development projects and on the other hand the processes of ethnic self-identification occurring, above all, with the Cariri of Dantas Well - Umari, in Crato. Thus, this research sought to identify the potential of the identity processes underway in the Cariri community of Poço Dantas - Umari in the face of the development of the Cariri region of Ceará. For that, a documental and bibliographic analysis was carried out in several sources available on the internet. It was observed that the development projects for this region, especially the Canal das Águas do Ceará, violated important rights of the Cariri people of Poço Dantas Umari. Made possible by the State, this project irreversibly changed the life of this village and brought great impacts to the environment. Despite these facts, there is an ongoing process of identity mobilization, this people, through numerous actions, has established itself politically (and definitively) in the scenario of the Brazilian indigenous movement and has claimed rights before the Brazilian State, notably before FUNAI. Add to this the fact that Nature for the Cariri people has another meaning, opposite to the meanings given by the Market and in times where we see before our eyes the fateful consequences of climate change, this biophilic and biocentric consciousness is a treasure guarded by time. By situating this scenario from the perspective of environmental challenges, the permanence of the ways of life of the Kariri, who keep a deep reverence for the Chapada do Araripe, will guarantee the permanence of this place. It is necessary to understand the sense of simultaneous protection in this relationship.
