RESUMO:

Ticks are arachnid arthropods and hematophagous ectoparasites from various hosts, such as domestic animals, wild animals and humans. Therefore, they are of significant importance as vectors of pathogens such as protozoa, bacteria and viruses, transmitting various diseases to humans and wild and domestic animals. In Brazil, the tick that most affects the dog is Rhipicephalus sanguineus, known as the brown tick, the main vector of Babesia canis and Ehrlichia canis, for dogs, and Rickettsia conorii, for humans. Seeking to reduce the damage and consequences that conventional ticks cause to animals, humans and the environment, alternative ways to combat canine ticks have been emerging lately. Among them, the search for effective, economically viable natural ticks for low-income and less polluting populations, based on the concept of sustainability, combining economic development with environmental responsibility. This work aims to investigate the action of essential oils or plant extracts in the control of Ripicephalus sanguineus. This is a systematic review study with meta-analysis. A search was made for articles published on the Google Scholar portal with the key (+ Acaricidal activity + "Rhipicephalus sanguineus" -boophilus -microplus -Fluralaner -Flumethrin-Fipronil -collars), published in the last 10 years until October 26 of 2019. The search returned 105 results.
Inclusion criteria were the following inclusion criteria: peer-reviewed articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish, as well as articles on intervention studies of plant extracts or essential oils involving Rhipicephalus sanguineus. For meta-analysis only articles with comparable measures will be included. For the quantitative analysis will be adopted the program R, being considered as a predictor variable the intervention to some extract or essential oil and as an outcome its effect on Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Depending on how the data are presented in the articles (quantitative or qualitative response) and the characteristics of their distribution, two methods of analysis will be applied: the Mantel-Haenszel fixed effect (presence of homogeneity) and DerSimonian-Laird random (presence of heterogeneity of effects of included studies). This latter model is indicated when the Inconsistency Index (I2) approaches 75% or the significance level (p value) of this test is below 0.05 (Ayres et al., 2007). Higgins (2003) classifies this index as low, moderate and high, I2 of 25, 50% and 75%, respectively.
