RESUMO:

The present proposal appeared with the purpose of knowing how the Beekeeping Activity operates in a sustainable manner favoring the strengthening of the families of the beekeepers of the Serra Brejinho community in Jardim, Ceará. The community is part of Cariri Cearense, a sub-region characterized by semi-arid climate, which historically faces long periods of drought, interspersed by brief rainfall intervals, with a low rainfall rate that contributes to the impoverishment of the rural population, especially agriculture for their livelihood. This reality contributes to the economic and sustainable fragility of these families. In this context, beekeeping is considered as an alternative to minimize the consequences of constant drought, provoking innumerable possibilities of income generation, with benefits in other dimensions of sustainability, producing significant gains with the occupation of the rural and cultural environment, as well as the maintenance of the biodiversity and ecosystems. Thus, the central objective was to evaluate the potential of beekeeping as a sustainable instrument to strengthen the Serra Brejinho community in Jardim-CE. For this, a qualitative and quantitative approach was chosen in order to respond more comprehensively to the multiple dimensions of sustainability addressed. The study was carried out from July to November 2018, under the perspective of the dimensions of Sustainability proposed by Sachs (1993, 2004, 2008, 2009), the Sustainable Development Objectives (ODS) and the principles of solidarity economy proposed by SINGER (2002). The study adopted the following a methodology: To obtain non-verbal information, the observational method was used based on field visits, bibliographic research, and data collection through semi-structured interviews. The results of the literature are conclusive that beekeeping has the potential to generate income and other benefits, such as: developing environmental awareness, producing well-being and maintaining the population in the field, promoting integration and strengthening. However, from the analysis, it can be considered that beekeeping is promoting the strengthening of the Serra Brejinho community at the intermediate level, it requires more deepening of the collective actions of the association of beekeepers, the adoption of technologies that favor the increase of production and solidarity and management mechanisms for the marketing of apiculture products, promoting greater sustainability in its various dimensions. It is hoped that this study will be an instrument of theoretical and practical discussions about the importance of beekeeping as a sustainable instrument, and the possible generation of public policies that favor the development of this activity and the people involved
