RESUMO:

The large population densities characteristic of the model of urbanization adopted at the present time are unsustainable from the point of view of food security, since the non-agricultural use of the land is prioritized, necessitating the daily importation of food. One of the problems generated by consumption in these areas is that types of food are demanded that are highly demanding in water to be produced, like the banana (Musa ssp.). The concept of Virtual Water is applied to the hidden volume of water contained in an entire productive process. In semi-arid regions, knowing this volume is essential to determine the best use of available water resources, this becomes more relevant if production targets export. The present work critically analyzed the capacity of the hydrological system of the Cariri Valley to support the current model of production carried out by agribusiness companies that practice irrigated banana farming with a view to the external market. The research was based on an ethics and a view of the New Water Culture. Initially a historiography of the development process of the commercial agriculture in the region, in particular the sugar cane and the banana was traced, followed by a deepening in the hydrological systems of the Bioregion of Chapada do Araripe and in the concept of Virtual Water. In order to calculate the territorial dimension and the water consumption in the irrigated business areas, the following procedures were performed: obtaining images of the Landsat 8 space satellite, available from the United States Geological Survey; collection of climatological data at the National Institute of Meteorology, coming from the Barbalha Meteorological Station; data processing in REF ET - (Reference Evapotranspiration Calculator) and METRIC (Mapping evapotranspiration at high resolution and with internalized calibration) softwares. The main result was the annual volume of 32.1 billion cubic meters of Virtual Water exported through the banana to the capitals of the North, Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil, evidencing the unsustainability of irrigated commercial banana in the analyzed region. Finally, questions are raised about the need for a paradigm shift that promotes an ethics of water care, based on affective, environmental, social and economic values.
