RESUMO:

The backyard is a place of experimentation and experimentation, which has been used

in the present day, also as a farm, by the diminution of arable spaces. They are usually

small areas, managed by the owning family. Communities of two distinct environments

were selected: cerrado and caatinga, both in the municipality of Crato, Cariri Cearense.

Because the yard is a space near the residences, plants of the most diverse are

cultivated, from native, medicinal, to exotic. From their popular names, it was sought to

identify them with their scientific names. Because these plants are located in a managed

environment, with defined areas, these areas were measured in order to know the sizes

of the backyards, and the biodiversity sheltered in them. In this way, because it is a

space taken care of by people, forms were applied, in order to know the aspects related

to backyards, and families. A qualitative-quantitative research, whose data were

analyzed, using descriptive statistics, and discourse analysis. What could be noticed was

that even in small areas, where there are houses, animal breeding spaces, such as

stingless bees, cattle, chickens, storage of water resources (cisterns), and other benefits,

the sites surveyed, both in the caatinga and in the cerrado, shelter a great diversity of

plants. The backyard is a place of interactions, which provides health through the foods

and plants present, in addition to generating income and well-being for the family. The

research proved to be the productive yard, a sustainable technology, because it is

possible to have in small spaces, a diverse production, with principles of agroecology,

with respect to nature.
