AREA: Agronomia
SUMMARY:

Basic sanitation plays a key role in the sustainable development of cities by providing services such as sewage, treated water, solid waste management and urban drainage, promoting health and well-being. These services increase life expectancy, reduce gastrointestinal diseases and are key indicators of sustainable development. In addition, the right to sanitation drives public policies that aim at public health, environmental protection and human dignity, benefiting present and future generations. It is essential to evaluate and improve sanitation policies to ensure universal access, especially for the most vulnerable, in addition to reducing regional inequalities. Since the lack of or inefficiency in sanitation negatively affects the environment and quality of life, its relevance for human survival and sustainable development at different levels is highlighted. The research is limited to the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte, located in the south of the state of Ceará and part of the Metropolitan Region of Cariri (RMCariri). The research aims to analyze the reality of the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte in relation to basic sanitation and how basic sanitation policies and services contribute to achieving a more sustainable municipality. Regarding its methodological procedures, it is classified as a documentary analysis and bibliographic research. To obtain the data, data will be extracted from the National Sanitation Information System - SNIS, Municipal Environmental Authority - AMAJU, Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE, Water and Sewage Company of Ceará - Cagece and Sustainable Development Index of Cities - Brazil - IDSC - BR. It should be noted that the time frame for the documentary analysis consists of the years 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. The preliminary results regarding specific objective 1 show that the municipality presents challenges related to water supply, since approximately 24.77% do not have access to water supply and the water supply system possibly has failures due to a large volume of water produced not being consumed, meaning that real and apparent losses may be occurring. Regarding sanitation, an absence of the service is visible, with approximately 76.6% of its population not having access in 2022. It should be noted that all collected sewage is treated. As for household waste, Juazeiro do Norte reached the mark of 100% of its urban population served in 2021, in contrast to the final disposal of this waste occurs in a controlled landfill, as pointed out in the bibliographic survey. The bibliographic survey found that the municipality has been facing challenges for years when it comes to sewage, highlighting the need for urgent improvements. It is clear that significant investments are needed in basic sanitation in Juazeiro do Norte, especially in the infrastructure of the sewage and water supply systems. Furthermore, it is essential that the municipality seeks to meet the requirements established in public policies, such as the disposal of waste in a controlled landfill. In order for the municipality to achieve universalization of services, it urgently requires that goals be set and implemented to change the reality in which the municipality finds itself.
