RESUMO:

Photovoltaic solar energy has provided the world with an option that is not only economical, but also sustainable in relation to energy consumption. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a crucial role in this regard, as much more than educational institutions, they directly contribute to the formation of critical thinking and to the dissemination of sustainability. In this context, this research started from a global scenario until reaching the regional scenario. First, through a quali-quantitative approach and performing a systematic review of the literature of national and international publications, this research identified the barriers faced by HEIs regarding the use of photovoltaic solar energy, showing that the academy even lacks training for expand the knowledge of the faculty to the topic at hand, but also highlighted the advantages perceived by these HEIs. An exploratory research was also carried out, through a case study based on secondary data, which will fundamentally serve as a foundation for future HEIs to adopt the use of photovoltaic solar energy in the Metropolitan Region of Cariri (RMC). Finally, through a bibliographic and documentary research, the current panorama of the use of photovoltaic solar energy in the RMC HEIs was outlined, a gap that has been unexplored so far, showing that less than 25% of the HEIs adopt this practice, denoting an opportunity immense for the sustainability experience, given the existing potential. From the results obtained, it appears that for a long time it is not only the economic benefits that make solar energy attractive, but also the benefits provided to the social and environmental dimension.
