RESUMO:
The Sustainable Development policy in the context of water resources, seeks the rational use of water from the perspective of integrated management, associated in a harmonious way with the environment, in order to guarantee this resource with sufficient quantity and assured quality. The problems arising from the predatory use of the environment, particularly water, are discussed worldwide in the search for solutions where potability and use are relevant themes. The use of groundwater is predominant in supplying populations in arid and semi-arid regions, whose assessment of the quality of this resource is a determining factor for the water security of these populations. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the quality of groundwater from wells monitored in the São José Hydrographic Microbasin and the Araripe Sedimentary Basin (eastern portion) located in Cariri Cearense. The objectives were achieved through seasonal hydrochemical monitoring, use of probability curves to identify critical variables, and the use of multivariate statistical tools, in which a regional quality index (IQAR) was proposed. Through the results obtained, changes were observed in relation to land use and occupation, and changes in water quality. The results showed that 55.55% of the variables analyzed in the BSA exceeded the reference parameters. The seasonal variation was significant for nitrate and Turbidity. Escherichia coli and nitrate were the variables that had the greatest influence on quality. The results showed that wells adjacent to more densely urbanized areas are affected by anthropic factors related to low coverage of the local sewage network. The average values of the IQAR showed that the groundwater of the evaluated aquifer falls mainly into the Regular and Good classes. The study demonstrated that the evaluation by quality curves and IQAR can be used as an important tool for the management and management of aquifers in arid and semi-arid areas. In addition to allowing the identification of key anthropic factors that deserve greater attention in the management of underground water resources.
