The purpose of the present study is to bring sanitation as a sustainable development strategy to the discussion, improving the knowledge about the quality of effluents from an institution that, in the first instance, are designed to expand the provision of health services as a social development policy , improving their access and adding increasingly dense and complex technologies. The environmental price, however, is not usually computed in this balance, this study, however, it is proposed to measure the deleterious potential of these hospital effluents in the physico-chemical and microbiological aspects, Identify the main pollutants related to health services and analyze the environmental and social risks arising from these activities. The analysis of the activities carried out in the health units in the city center of study indicated that pharmacological substances, in particular the antimicrobials in the environment. Based on this verification, eight sampling points were selected within the flow of the sanitary network and in the receiving water body in order to perform contrastive analyzes of interest regarding the formation of microflora with resistance phenotypes to pharmaceutical specialties of the most consumed antimicrobials in the health units studied. The microbiological analysis of the isolates collected in the selected sites constitutes specifically the isolation of gram positive and positive bacteria, with subsequent testing for antimicrobial susceptibility previously selected consonant with the consumption profile of the nosocomial units studied. The observations made point to a significant increase in the microbial resistance phenotype in specific antibiotic classes such as carbapenems and glycopeptides at the points marked in the Batateira river, suggesting a strong influence of the resistance profile of hospital effluents from the city of Juazeiro do Norte in the microflora alterations in the environment . Regarding the overall incidence of resistant strains, the observations by contrast of interest did not indicate differences between the analyzed points, suggesting that other anthropic activities also exert influence on the susceptibility profile in aquatic environments in the region of cariri at points not yet determined in this study.
