SUMMARY:

The Horto neighborhood occupies a prominent position in the history and current situation of the city of Juazeiro do Norte, in the interior of Ceará. This does not exclude the complex reality of the place, whether from an environmental or social perspective, as is the case in peripheral locations of the urban environment. That said, this research is justified by the fact that the Horto neighborhood is the scene of a series of socio-environmental problems little explored by the scientific literature, especially when worked from the perspective of sustainable development. The general objective of this dissertation is to analyze the socio-environmental sustainability of the Horto neighborhood, in Juazeiro do Norte - CE, considering the context of geo-historical formation of the municipality of Juazeiro and its implications for the Horto neighborhood, the realization of an environmental diagnosis of the neighborhood between 2000 and 2023 and the investigation of socio-environmental sustainability through the protected areas present. A qualitative approach was adopted using bibliographic, documentary and iconographic research, in addition to a field analysis of environmental impacts and subsequent cartographic overlay of the impacts with the protected areas of the neighborhood. The first specific objective allowed us to ascertain the strong symbolic relationship between the religiosity of Horto and its space and its components, of Horto as the “center of the world”, and of the nature of the place possessing a sacredness. The second specific objective consolidated an environmental diagnosis of the Horto neighborhood, with a series of negative impacts identified for the resident population and the environment. Finally, in its final specific objective, this research identified physical, biotic and anthropic impacts in the Horto neighborhood and its protected areas. Therefore, as a result, a series of impacts were found in the most diverse protected areas of the Horto neighborhood, with a predominance of modification of the relief, induction of landslides and other mass movements and the generation of waste, in addition to vegetative modifications and alterations of the areas of exposed soil in the perimeter of Horto. The impacts affect each of the protected areas in different ways.
