SUMMARY:

Urban pests, as published in resolution RDC 52, are organisms that infest urban environments and can cause damage to human health, domestic animals and economic losses, for example, Aedes aegypti and Periplaneta americana. The uncontrolled use of synthetic chemical insecticides to control pests can cause damage to the environment and human health, therefore, there is a ban on several products and stricter regulations. The species Sarcomphalus joazeiro Mart. Popularly known as juá, it is an endemic plant from the Caatinga of the Rhamnaceae family that has insecticidal activity. With the aim of alleviating dependence on insecticides, in conjunction with the urgency of finding new, safer, more ecological and efficient methods, one of the ways is the use of plant extracts, which are being seen as an alternative and sustainable form of control. The objective was to evaluate the bioinsecticide potential of the methanolic extract of Sarcomphalus joazeiro on the vectors Periplaneta americana and Aedes ssp. The research is divided into three articles. The first article is an evaluation of the screening of phytochemical classes of the extract, insecticidal activity against Aedes ssp., insecticidal, repellent and biochemical action of the stem bark extract of the methanolic extract of Sarcomphalus joazeiro, after exposure to different concentrations against the Periplaneta americana vector, in which it exhibited some classes of compounds, repellency and antioxidant effects. The second article presented the analysis of bioactive compounds from the methanolic extract and neurobehavioral parameters after exposure of P. americana with a diet supplemented with methanolic extract of S. joazeiro, exhibiting major compounds and locomotor changes in the concentrations tested according to the selected and evaluated parameters. The last article presented a scientometric review on bioinsecticides against Aedes aegypti, elucidating data on how research against this vector of arboviruses has been growing, as well as what are the production rates by authors, countries, areas of knowledge and parameters bibliometrics. It is concluded that the methanolic extract of S. joazeiro presented some classes and major compounds, repellent and antioxidant activity in oxidative stress markers against P. americana, as well as neurobehavioral effects, but did not present insecticidal activity against the research vectors. The use of bioinsecticides to control vectors is an alternative, promising and ecological method, however, it is essential to carry out an investigation of different methods to understand which is best suited to control each vector and each stage of it.
