RESUMO:

One of today's great socio-economic and environmental challenges is to develop sustainable technologies for energy generation. In this sense, the use of methane generated in wastewater treatment plants in an industrial refrigerator is an alternative source of sustainable energy, since its production in the treatment of this type of industry is high. However, an important portion of the biogas produced in UASB reactors is wasted with the effluent from these reactors in dissolved form. Thus, this research aims to investigate the effect of the configuration of the phase separation element on the capture of biogas in UASB reactors treating effluents from industrial refrigerators, submitted to the same operational conditions. For this, two reactors with different configurations of the phase separation element were used, one in the conventional model (R1) and the other in the Y model (R2). The reactors were subjected to organic volumetric loads (VOCs) of 5.8 to 9.5 kgDQO / m3.d and 5.0 to 8.1 kgDQO / m3.d for reactors R1 and R2, respectively. The effluents of these reactors were monitored by analyzing temperature, pH, alkalinity (and their fractions), organic matter and solids. The biogas flows captured by the phase separators and the compositions of the biogas samples were also determined. From the results obtained, it appears that the two reactors showed satisfactory operational stability, since the pH values remained in the neutral range. This result was corroborated by the good material removal efficiency
(74% for R1 and 73% for R2) and the high biogas flow rates with high methane percentages: on average 0.063 m3 / d of biogas (with an average methane content of 79.5%) was obtained for the R1 and 0.064 m3 / d of biogas (with an average methane content of 79.4%) for R2. When analyzing the data statistically, it was verified that there were no significant differences between the operational performances of the studied reactors. It was also found that the different configurations of the phase separation elements studied in this research did not have a significant effect on the capture of biogas. Thus, this result suggests that the choice of the phase separation element configuration, conventional model or Y model, should be made based on financial and structural stability aspects. Finally, it is reinforced that the treatment of industrial refrigerator effluents by means of UASB reactors can constitute a sustainable technology for the generation of energy from biogas, since it has a high methane content.
