RESUMO:

Population growth and densification in cities have increased the importance of quality of urban spaces. In this sense, the carrying out of studies to evaluate the of urban river basins is a strategy that aims to areas. The objective of this research was to evaluate the Environmental Quality Index of the sub- basin of the Timbaúbas, located in the south of the State of Ceará, through the socio-environmental and political-institutional indicators. The delimitation and morphometric characterization of the study area was performed by satellite imaging. To facilitate the study, the sub-basin was divided into six Assessment Units (UA I, UA II, UA III, UA IV, UA V and UA VI), using the criterion of the variable population density. For the selection of the collection points, by Evaluation Unit, the methodology of the stratified random sampling using geoprocessing software. The index of environmental quality was constituted by 10 socio-environmental indicators, related to the basic sanitation services, the state of preservation of permanent preservation areas, the quality of the soil and water resources, the noise levels and the presence of areas of recreation. As for the political-institutional indicators, which totaled 5, aspects related to the quality of the services rendered to the population in the areas education, public safety and lighting, health and urban mobility. From the analysis of the results, it was found that the worst environmental quality indices were identified in UA I, UA II, UA III and UA IV. The indicators that contributed significantly to this urban sewage and urban sewage services. The best environmental quality was verified in UA V and VI, due to the high levels of indicators of water supply, public safety and public lighting. Those These results reinforce the need for the public authority to analyze in an equitable way all areas that are part of the Timbaúbas sub-basin, since differences were obtained expressive of environmental quality among their evaluation units, in order to be able to implement more assertive public policies for the reality of each locality.
