SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to understand how philosophy can contribute to a critical re-examination of the religious phenomenon in public schools from the perspective of secularism. Its specific objectives are: to understand the religious phenomenon in contemporary times from the perspective of contemporary philosophical criticism; to reflect on the presence of the religious phenomenon in the curriculum of Brazilian public schools; to problematize the religious phenomenon in schools, considering the aspect of secularism; and to contribute to teacher training by developing a didactic sequence for re-examining the religious phenomenon in Philosophy Teaching.In recognizing its finitude, the human being is driven to seek the infinite. Beyond describing the world around them and perceiving peculiar aspects of themselves, we define the meaning of life and death, transcending the natural world, and defining ourselves by the pursuit of the absolute not only through critical reflection but also through beliefs and feelings. Oliveira (2013) highlights the indispensability of criticism of religion in understanding the modern and contemporary world, conceiving, from the analyses of Habermas and Gauchet, the political dimension in religious communities, as well as the capacity for a philosophical analysis of religion challenged by the emergence of the triumph of technical-scientific discourse. Secularism appears as a category defining modern states and a school-based perspective to contribute to diversity and freedom of beliefs. The methodology is qualitative, using the action research method. Data will be collected through training meetings and discussion groups. Data analysis will be conducted using the Discourse of the Collective Subject (Léfreve, Léfreve, 2005, 2010). The social actors participating in the research will be high school students from a state public school in Mauriti, Ceará. In addition to field research, we will use the works of Oliveira (2013) and Silva (2021) to ground the category of the religious phenomenon; Habermas (2007) and Gauchet (1985) for the discussion of secularism. With the analysis of the data collected through discussions and training, and the theoretical grounding provided by the cited authors, the research seeks to strengthen the role of philosophy in promoting diversity and critical reflection on religion, supporting the creation of a school environment that respects and integrates diverse perspectives. We hope that the work will contribute to teacher training by developing pedagogical actions that favor a critical and reflective approach to religion in Philosophy Teaching. In doing so, the research aims to enrich students' understanding of the philosophical and political dimensions of religion and promote a more inclusive and respectful educational environment for different beliefs. Furthermore, the research expects to provide valuable insights into the practical application of secularism in public schools and offer tools for more critical and comprehensive education.
