RESUMO:

It analyzes the practice of information skills based on the local information system of the users of the library system of the State University of Paraíba, campus IV - Catolé do Rocha - Paraíba (SIB-UEPB). It proposes an in - depth knowledge of the information practices of certain segments of the library 's user community, in order to foster the creation and formalization of an information competency program - an instrument that does not exist in the reality of Brazilian university libraries. To do so, it delineates participant research, based on the development of an "ethnography of information", including the use of varied methods of data collection, for example, semi-structured ethnographic interviews, field diary, individual meetings, visual methods - in an attempt to cover the breadth of the various contextual dimensions of the practice of information skills in the library. It hopes that this study will provide discussions and awareness, especially of university administrators and the library, about the importance and advantages of the information competencies action - valued in this study as a social responsibility action and a means of recognizing the institutional and professional relevance of Librarianship and Information Science - and results in a proposal for an information skills program for SIB-UEPB.
