It deals with the empirical study of the Ceará State Public Library, located in the Praia de Iracema neighborhood,
and the Dolor Barreira Municipal Public Library, located in the Benfica neighborhood, both in the city of Fortaleza,
in the State of Ceará, as mediation environments for memory. Information mediation is an action of dialogue
between the role of the public library and the process of preserving and disseminating memory in the capital
of Ceará. The public library as an institution that holds the memory of a people, brings in its repertoire, stories
and memories, that is, the recognition of the past, mainly in the books, magazines and newspapers of the
time and finds it in the present, with new information technologies and communication new possibilities of
presenting in the most varied existing supports and with IT resources, converting physical elements and
materials into virtual reality. Libraries, now under study, have carried out, over time, activities that seek to
lead the local community and society in general to reflect on history, daily life and cultural life, using various
programs, almost always culminating with the dissemination of the collection. The problem is based on the
following question: What is the role of the public libraries in the capital of Ceará, the State Public Library
of Ceará and the Dolor Barreira Municipal Public Library in the development of the memory of the
neighborhoods of Fortaleza? The general objective is: to investigate the mediation practices of the
aforementioned libraries for the preservation and dissemination of the memory of the neighborhoods
of Fortaleza, aiming at the proposal to create a cooperative service between the two libraries aimed
at preserving the memory of the neighborhoods of Fortaleza. The specific objectives are: a) identify the
services that the two referenced libraries have performed in terms of mediation; b) characterize the services
that cover other neighborhoods in the city of Fortaleza carried out by the highlighted libraries; c) understand
how the mediation of cultural memory works in the spaces of these libraries aimed at preserving the memory
of the neighborhoods of the capital of Ceará. Bibliographical research was carried out where topics related to
memory, information mediation and the public library are discussed, observing theoretical and conceptual
aspects. Considering the contributions of authors such as Halbwachs (1990), Nora (1993),
Almeida Júnior (2009, 2015, 2020, 2021), Silva e Ribeiro (2010), Silva (2015, 2016) and others.
The methodology is qualitative in nature, characterized in terms of descriptive objectives and technical
procedures in bibliography. A questionnaire and semi-structured interview with managers and information
professionals were used as methodological resources.
