Reading Practices. School Library. Reading competence.
The school library is a space for the development of the teaching and learning process, whose main objective is to put students in direct contact with the literary universe, encouraging and disseminating the taste for reading. For this to be effective, it is necessary to provide instruments and conditions for the student to exercise the habit of reading, just as it is of paramount importance to instruct parents and professionals to make reading a tool for social and cultural transformation. This study aimed to build a ‘Manual of reading practices for school libraries’. And as specific objectives: to investigate the reading practices of high school students integrated with Técnico, as well as the frequency with which they read and to identify which reading activities may be adopted by IFPI school libraries. The following question is problematic: what strategies can be adopted by the IFPI Library - Campus Picos in order to encourage reading practices in students in addition to mandatory readings? It is based on the hypothesis that there is no adequate use by the student community (users) with regard to leisure and entertainment readings, which also bring learning to both academic and social life. The methodological approach started from a bibliographic review on the theme, proceeding a posteriori with the elaboration and application of questionnaires with the students of the High School of the IFPI - Campus Picos, in order to verify their informational aspirations and to identify the activities of reading that can be developed with these students. Thus, resulting in the elaboration of an action policy for school libraries, the Manual, being composed of a set of initiatives aimed at greater participation and interaction of the library with these students, as well as the development of their reading competence, to be used by Information Unit in question and other school libraries.
