THE ACCESSIBILITY ON THE WEBSITES OF THE LIBRARIES OF THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF THE NORTH / NORTHEAST REGION
Web accessibility. Digital information environments. Federal Institutes.
Living in a society in which technology is an integral part of daily activities carried out
at all times is a great challenge because having the condition to access a tool that is not
available for routine needs is the same as being trapped in an environment of freedom
with multiple choices. The World Wide Web (Web) provides this experience in a
cooperative way among digital information environments for various users. Therefore, it
is considered that the contents contained in the web should provide the simplified use
directed to all the public regardless of their physical, mental and other conditions. With
this, the digital accessibility proposes the inclusion of disabled users in the most diverse
forms and formats of presentation of contents on the web, aiming the interaction of the
subjects with the environment so that the resolutions of their problems in the day to day
become a breakthrough quality of life. The research aims to evaluate the accessibility of
web pages of libraries of the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology
(IFs) of the North and Northeast of the country, taking into account the standards of
accessibility recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), by the Web
Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Web Standards in Electronic Government
(E-PWG) and the Electronic Government Accessibility (E-MAG) model. Thus, the
overall objective of the study is to propose guidelines for the IF library pages to be a
digitally accessible environment. It is hypothesized that the pages of the libraries of the
FIs do not satisfactorily contemplate the recommended accessibility standards to serve
their users with some type of disability. To do this, they are proposed in the specific
objectives: Identify the libraries that offer accessibility tools in their pages and if the
accessibility standards are being adopted correctly; analyze the real contribution
libraries make to their users by making accessibility available on their pages;
disseminating among the libraries of the IFs of the North and Northeast, the importance
of guaranteeing policies to encourage the inclusion of accessibility in its pages; prepare
a primer with accessibility recommendations for making the information available on
the pages of the libraries according to the suggested standards. Methodologically the
research comprises an in-depth review of the specialized literature with its applied
nature that will give greater meaning to the subjects' sense of existence, who use the
pages of the libraries with accessibility can appropriate the information and feel
increasingly part of a whole , which is the information society.
