Skills in information. Information practice. Academic library.
Information literacy. Information practice. Academic library.
This study analyzes the information literacy practice based on the local regime of information of
the users of the State University of Paraíba Library System, campus IV - Catolé do Rocha -
Paraíba (SIB-UEPB). It proposes a depth investigation about information practices of certain
segments of the library 's user community, in order to foster the creation and formalization of an
information literacy program - an instrument that does not exist in the reality of Brazilian
university libraries. In doing so, it is designed a participant research, based on development of
an “Ethnography of Information” - which includes the use of several data collection methods,
for example, semi-structured ethnographic interviewing, recording fieldnotes, individual
encounters, visual methods - in an attempt to cover the breadth of the various contextual
dimensions of information literacy practices. Hopefully, this study will provide discussions
and awareness, especially of university administrators and the academic library, about the
importance and advantages of the information literacy educational action - which is valued in
this study as a social responsibility action and a means of recognizing the institutional and
professional relevance of Librarianship and Information Science - and results in a proposal for
an information literacy program for SIB-UEPB.
