Mediation in the scope of Information Organization: proposal of an action program for the Library System of the Federal University of Ceará

This dissertation discusses perspectives for the application of technical mediation in the
Information Organization, under a pluralistic and integrative perception of these fields of
research, in the ambience of the university library. In this sense, the general objective of this
study is to investigate the prospects for the application of technical mediation in the
Information Organization aiming at the construction of a program of action for the
System of Libraries of the Federal University of Ceará. While the objectives
specific approaches: to approach the relations between mediation and Information Organization
in the field of technical mediation; discuss possibilities for the application of mediation
information technology in the Library System of the Federal University of Ceará;
identify possible aspects that characterize the technical mediation of information in the
above system; to propose a program of technical mediation in the
within the scope of the Information Organization for that system. The reasoning
The theoretical-methodological approach is based on the bibliographical and
conceptions of mediation in the context of the Information Organization, discussed
analyze the facts available in the literature, as well as discuss its applicability
in cataloging processes; ranking; indexation; library signage;
collection development policy; services; products; preservation of memory;
use of virtual resources. As for the objectives, it is an exploratory-
descriptive. As for the technical procedures, it is characterized by the
bibliographical, documentary, participant. It is adopted as a technique of data collection,
methods (questionnaires with 33 librarians, 363 users;
semistructured with the director of the Library System and 3 director of libraries
sectoral; direct observation), as well as using content analysis as a technique
of qualitative data analysis. As one of the results presents: The Program of Technical Mediation of Information. It is concluded that the Program brings together a network of actions based on the mediation in the scope of the Information Organization. Thus, it is expected that university libraries will appropriate this material to: demonstrate the Organization of Information as a practice of technical mediation under the multiple possibilities dimension, so that their actions are seen as human and social, carried out for and with the user ; reverberar among the professionals of the area, the mediational character of the sectors that involve the Information Organization in the university library.
