The Graduate Program in Library Science (PPGB), approved in 2015 and implemented in 2016, comprises both the Professional Master's and Doctorate in Library Science, prioritizing the diverse training of professional researchers. The PPGB has been responsible for the qualification and defense of dozens of dissertations categorized under the concentration area Library Science in Contemporary Society and within its two research lines: Information, Culture, and Memory and Production, Communication, and Use of Information. The broad scope of the research lines allows for the integration of both faculty and students, whether or not they come from a background in Library Science, promoting regional inclusion.
The PPGB emerged during a period of significant reform in academic and scientific practice in Brazil, encouraging new forms of knowledge production and embracing new types of research and researchers. The Professional Master’s and later the Professional Doctorate in Library Science, proposed by the Federal University of Cariri (UFCA), embody multiple configurations that are directly interconnected and deserve prominent recognition.
The first point relates to how Library Science positions itself within this project of expansion and restructuring of Federal Universities, particularly in the articulation between undergraduate and graduate studies, taking into account both the qualitative and quantitative growth of graduate programs aimed at pedagogical renewal in higher education. Therefore, considering the diverse research and professional application potential in Ceará, especially in the Cariri region, the PPGB's design includes a concentration area, research lines, and faculty projects that foster dialogue with a variety of knowledge fields, aligning strategically and pragmatically with the proposal to restructure and expand Federal Institutions of Higher Education.
The second point concerns the interdisciplinarity that unfolds in historical-conceptual, political-institutional, educational, and functional aspects, positioning Library Science as a field of identity construction that strengthens its theoretical and epistemological foundations through interaction with multiple areas of knowledge.
There is also a strong historical-conceptual interdisciplinary practice at UFCA between Library Science and other programs—not only within the Center for Applied Social Sciences but also across other centers and institutes at UFCA. This partnership, already well-established in undergraduate and lato sensu graduate programs, as well as in research practices rooted in theoretical-pragmatic aspects of management, information technologies, and quantitative/qualitative research methods, is also present within the PPGB.
It is also worth highlighting the PPGB/UFCA's interdisciplinary potential, enriched by diverse professionals and researchers from neighboring institutions. With research lines focused on studies of memory, popular and regional culture, management, technologies, and reading, the PPGB allows professionals from various programs in the Cariri Region, the State of Ceará, and the broader Northeast Region to join the Program as students, while faculty from these Higher Education Institutions may participate as permanent, collaborating, or visiting professors.
